Important Notice
Appraisers placed on the FHA Roster will not receive a confirmation letter; however, HUD will send a denial letter to the appraiser if it determines the application to be ineligible. Appraisers should verify their placement on the roster and the accuracy of the information posted by checking the FHA roster status at https://entp.hud.gov/idapp/html/apprlook.cfm. Appraisers who notice incorrect information should fax the corrected information to: (202) 401-0416.
Applicants are advised, when preparing for the exam, that FHA expects the responses to the exam questions (other than the USPAP related questions) to be a verbatim recitation of the language in the Valuation Protocol, Appendix D of Handbook 4150.2. Familiarity with USPAP is assumed due to licensing requirements.
HUD does not approve or disapprove specific training courses. Industry groups, professional societies and trade organizations provide FHA appraiser exam training courses. Contact the local chapter of your professional organization, if you subscribe to one, or the national organizations of appraisal sponsors. The American Society of Appraisers (ASA), Appraisal Institute (AI), National Association of Independent Fee Appraisers (NAIFA) and National Association of Master Appraisers (NAMA) are some of the industry groups offering FHA courses. All the groups have websites and the AI offers a course online.
The new exam is on page 3 of Form HUD-92563. The answers to the exam questions (other than those related to USPAP) are specifically stated in the Valuation Protocol, Appendix D of Handbook 4150.2. FHA expects the responses to the exam questions to be a verbatim recitation of the language in the Valuation Protocol. Familiarity with USPAP is assumed due to licensing requirements.
The FHA does not publish exam scores. Appraisers can only determine if he/she passed or failed the exam.
At this time, appraisers must pass the exam once. There is no limit to the number of times an appraiser may take the exam to pass.
HUD maintains a roster of appraisers who have satisfied certification requirements to perform FHA appraisals (see eligibility and placement process above). Lenders underwriting FHA loans may only accept appraisals from an appraiser on the FHA roster. Appraisers can check their roster status by visiting https://entp.hud.gov/idapp/html/apprlook.cfm. FHA appraisers who believe their roster status is incorrect should fax the corrected information to (202) 401-0416.
Appraisers on the FHA roster must submit a copy of the renewed state license or certification to HUD at the address below. Failure to submit the information in a timely manner may impact his/her eligibility to receive assignments.
